India has introduced on February 25, 2026 an important change to its Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) by extending the validity period of applicable registrations to five years.
Under the amended BIS Conformity Assessment Regulations, 2026, manufacturers may now obtain new BIS CRS registrations and renew existing registrations with a validity period of five years.
The previous practice has been discontinued. Under the earlier system, new registrations were generally granted for two years, while renewal applications could be submitted for periods of two, three, four or five years.
Key Compliance Requirements
- BIS CRS registration validity has been extended to five years.
- Manufacturers may extend applicable R-number registration certificates to a five-year validity period.
- Both new registration and renewal applications may be processed with five-year validity.
- Manufacturers must continue to submit required annual production data.
- Applicable annual fees must still be paid each year to maintain the registration.
- The BIS online system allows manufacturers to complete annual compliance updates before the applicable deadline.
Compliance Impact
The five-year validity period is expected to reduce the administrative burden associated with frequent BIS CRS certificate renewals and provide manufacturers with greater certainty when planning product compliance in India.
However, the longer certificate validity does not eliminate annual compliance obligations. Manufacturers must continue to complete the required yearly updates, provide production information and pay applicable annual fees to keep the registration active.
Companies with products subject to BIS CRS should review their existing registrations and internal renewal schedules to ensure that annual compliance requirements continue to be completed on time.
